What a resonating line! Thanks Tricia for stating this in class. I will never forget that moment! A simple idea to get across the idea of an accommodation, for sure, but also such an "aha" moment! Most of my family wears glasses or corrective eye-wear...and it's such a natural part of life. I can't imagine life without glasses or contacts--because, Laser eye surgery freaks me out!
Listening to this amazing man speak to us so candidly, was a moment I will always take with me in my career. He reminded us of so many things: teach them different, but not less;
teach them to advocate for themselves; students need to learn how THEY learn in order to be able to learn....so many valuable and heart felt "aha" moments. His struggles brought to the forefront a very important flag for all students with LD...that with those glasses, they can achieve anything. Thanks Joe for helping to further soften my eyes, and sharpen them to your struggles, and for our students with learning disabilities that I will help NOT fall through the cracks, or go unnoticed. That IEP and promise will hold up EVERYWHERE...even at night school if need be. |
